Cultivator

The Cultivator is the universal farming tool in Valheim. Cultivators plant seeds, cultivate the soil, and even replant grass and water lilies. You unlock the cultivator in the Bronze Age after you have collected some Bronze, Core Wood, and built a Forge.

Just like the Hammer, the cultivator gives you a building menu, but for plants.

Cultivator Upgrade Table

If you are a serious farmer, it’s well-worth upgrading the cultivator. It’s extremely cheap to upgrade it and significantly increases the cultivator’s durability.

Planting Trees

Trees can be planted in any type of soil in their native biome. If you plant trees too close together, they will die. Make sure you give them space or you will be wasting lots of seeds and cones.

Seeds cannot be planted in unprepared soil, you will need to cultivate the soil beforehand. Seeds can be planted anywhere in cultivated soil but make sure you don’t pack them too close to each other or they will die off very quickly. Some plants also have biome requirements and will die if planted outside their native biome.

See our page on Farming for more detailed information and a video showing how to prepare a simple farm.

One of the most important functions of the cultivator is that you can plant seed-plants. This means you can turn a carrot into a seed-carrot that will yield 3 carrot seeds when harvested. By cycling through vegetables and seed-vegetables, you can turn one vegetable into a verdant farm.
