Blast Furnaces are end-game smelters in Valheim. They are needed to refine metal dropped by Fulings in the plains. You must build blast furnaces in addition to your smelters because blast furnaces cannot process any metals below silver.
You can construct a blast furnace after you defeat Moder and make an Artisan Table. The blast furnace is part of the end-game trio of structures that are needed for everything in the end-game: Blast Furnace, Spinning Wheel, Windmill.

Blast furnaces use charcoal just like smelters but their inputs are both on the same side, allowing for more compact setups.
